A weathervane that shows which way the wind blows.

## Recipe

![Wind Vane recipe](https://1371052705-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FV22FKtcNjWW37kUFLLdR%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8136dab4090616593a855c65ba5b6f7b40960051%2Fwind_vane.png?alt=media)

## How to use it

Place it anywhere on the ship, high up and in the open. The arrow points where the wind is going. Steer your boat along the arrow to get the most out of square sails, or keep the wind on your side for triangle sails.

Look at it with Engineer's Goggles to read the **wind alignment** as a percentage: how well your ship is lined up with the wind.

## Good to know

* The wind changes with the place, the time of day and the weather. See [Wind](/create-deep-seas-wiki/high-seas/mechanics/wind.md).

**Details to look for**

* The arrow does not snap to the wind: it swings toward it smoothly and follows every small shift of the wind.
