# Ship Sail

The Ship Sail catches the wind and pushes the ship it is built on. It is the heart of High Seas.

## Recipe

![Ship Sail recipe](https://1371052705-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FV22FKtcNjWW37kUFLLdR%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-aa010349392d01bef3cb20069a224ace53633339%2Fwhite_sail.png?alt=media)

## How to use it

Place Ship Sail blocks on your ship. Blocks that touch each other in the same plane form one sail. Put a [Rudder](/create-deep-seas-wiki/high-seas/rudder.md) at the stern so the sails know where the bow is, and you are sailing.

* Set across the deck, it is a square sail: best with the wind behind.
* Set along the deck, it is a triangle sail: best with the wind from the side. Build its edge as a staircase and it cuts itself into a clean triangle.

How hard each one pushes, how fast your ship can go and how to reef the sails with a halyard is all on [Sails and halyards](/create-deep-seas-wiki/high-seas/mechanics/sails-and-halyards.md).

## Colours

Use a dye on a sail to change its colour, and keep using it to spread the colour across the canvas. There are 16 colours.

## Good to know

* Two Create Windmill Sails and a String make two Ship Sails. A Ship Sail crafts back into a Create Windmill Sail.
* Sails work on airships too, and catch more wind the higher they are.
* A sail under the water does nothing.
* The look of the cloth can be smoothed or made blockier with `sailSubdivisions` in the client config, or in the video settings (High Seas page).
* Under an Iris shader pack (Photon, Complementary, BSL, Bliss, Rethinking Voxels), sails billow and furl too. If a pack draws them wrong, turn off `shaderpackSails` (**Sails Under Shader Packs** in the video settings) to draw them flat. It applies the next time the pack is loaded.

**Details to look for**

* The cloth is drawn with a tessellation shader: it billows in the wind, bulges toward the side away from the wind, and flips over when the wind changes side.
* On a lowered sail, the head slides down its edge and the canvas folds onto its foot.
