# Rudder

The Rudder steers the boat and tells the sails where the bow is.

## Recipe

![Rudder recipe](https://1371052705-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FV22FKtcNjWW37kUFLLdR%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-45aad7ab848e9daf76e73e86e88919810c300f2f%2Frudder.png?alt=media)

## How to use it

1. Place it at the stern, under the waterline.
2. Its blade lines up with the way you look when you place it. Look across the boat so the blade runs from bow to stern.
3. Mount it under a Swivel Bearing to turn it. The angle of the blade steers the boat.

## What it does

* **Sails read it.** They always push the ship toward the bow, the end away from the Rudder. Without one, the ship sails along its longest side.
* **It acts as a keel.** In the water it keeps the boat from sliding sideways. Out of the water it does nothing.

## Looks

Like a Copycat block, right-click it with a block to give it that block's look. A wooden rudder on a wooden boat, an iron one on a steel ship.

**Details to look for**

* Disguised with a block, it keeps the shape of a rudder blade, only with that block's texture.
