# Sonar

The Sonar maps the water around the submarine: the sea floor, rocks, other ships and underwater mines. It works with the [Onboard Computer](/create-deep-seas-wiki/deep-seas/diving/onboard-computer.md).

## Recipe

![Sonar recipe](https://1371052705-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FV22FKtcNjWW37kUFLLdR%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6c9d0ec5cb512ce4f2b4ed8b0ae57ed13af977e6%2Fsonar.png?alt=media)

## How to use it

Place it on the same ship as an Onboard Computer. It can stand on a floor, hang from a ceiling or sit on a wall. Its plates spin while it listens, and every now and then it pings.

It unlocks two pages on the computer:

* **Sonar:** a map of the terrain around the ship, about 24 blocks out, and how much room is left under the hull. The magnifier opens a bigger map: left-drag to move, right-drag to turn, scroll to zoom.
* **Autopilot:** follows the sea floor and keeps the keel 4 m above it. It looks ahead along your course and climbs before a slope reaches you.

Contacts show up on the map: vessels, mines and unknown creatures.

## Good to know

* The depth of the sea floor under you is read down to 96 m. Deeper than that, the computer shows "Seabed: > 96 m".
* The autopilot never takes the submarine deeper than the hull can go.
* The light of its panels comes from the [Vortex Engine](/create-deep-seas-wiki/getting-started/graphics.md). Under an Iris shader pack, it gives normal Minecraft light.

**Details to look for**

* Its two plates spin once a second like a radar. Their green and pink panels glow in the dark and throw a matching light that sweeps the room.
* Every time a plate swings to the top, it flashes with the rainbow shimmer of Aeronautics' levitite. Once or twice a minute, a plate gives a crystal chime, a little higher or lower each time.
* On the computer, a blue ring spreads from the sonar every 2 seconds and redraws the terrain as it passes, so blocks placed or broken nearby show up on the next ring, even with the submarine standing still. Mines only show up once a ring has found them.
* Contacts are coloured: red for mines and hostile creatures, blue for other creatures, orange for other ships. Point at a dot to read its name.
* Ropes in range are drawn on the map too, including the one hanging from your own winch.
