# Onboard Computer

<img src="https://1371052705-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FV22FKtcNjWW37kUFLLdR%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-17c4374cf667c4ed626ef18d5c9b0c6a54ec406f%2Fcommand_sub.png?alt=media" alt="Onboard Computer" width="128">

The Onboard Computer is the brain of the submarine. Type a depth, pick a speed, and it fills, drains and holds the ballast for you. It also shows the state of the hull, maps the sea floor with a Sonar and tells you where your leaks are.

## Recipe

![Onboard Computer recipe](https://1371052705-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FV22FKtcNjWW37kUFLLdR%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-397fe5be093092b7bba1b425bdbc6b57f36408e4%2Fcommand_sub.png?alt=media)

## How to use it

Place it anywhere on the submarine, with [Pump Controllers](/create-deep-seas-wiki/deep-seas/diving/pump-controller.md) between the [Ballast Vent](/create-deep-seas-wiki/deep-seas/diving/ballast-vent.md) and the [Ballast Tanks](/create-deep-seas-wiki/deep-seas/diving/ballast-tank.md). Aim at its screen and click to use it. The arrows in the bottom right corner switch between the pages.

### Navigation

* **Target depth:** click it and type the depth you want, then Sneak, Enter or Esc to confirm. It starts at 20 m.
* **Speed:** Slow, Cruise or Fast. It sets how hard the pumps run (a third, two thirds or full speed).
* The screen shows the current depth, the vertical speed, the ballast fill level, what the pumps are doing and the **hull limit**, the depth where your weakest block starts to crack.

The computer measures how fast your pumps really are and starts braking early enough to stop right on the target, then holds it.

### Sonar and Autopilot

These two pages only show up with a [Sonar](/create-deep-seas-wiki/deep-seas/instruments/sonar.md) on the same ship. The Sonar page draws the terrain around the submarine. The Autopilot page follows the sea floor: it looks a few seconds ahead along your course and dives or climbs early to stay 4 m above the bottom. It never goes deeper than your hull can take.

### Diagnostic

Press **Run diagnostic**. The computer reads the hull, tests the pressure limit and searches for leaks from the room it stands in. The report gives:

* how deep the hull is safe, and which block is the weakest,
* how many cracks there are to repair,
* whether the room is hermetic or breached, with the coordinates of every leak.

## Good to know

* You can only break it while sneaking, so you do not punch it by accident while clicking the screen.
* One computer per submarine. A second one on the same ship does nothing.
* Docked submarines dive and rise together: they all follow the ballast orders of a single computer. Its screen reads **Docked · Lead**, and the computers of the other submarines read **Docked · Following**.
* It works as a Display Link source.

**Details to look for**

* There is no menu: the screen is a tilted paper chart and you click the buttons right on it, in the world.
* The middle of the screen draws your submarine as a live side-view blueprint, in the same line style as Simulated's diagram, on a scrolling depth gauge with the surface, the target and the crush limit.
* While you type a depth, your movement is locked so you do not walk away from the screen.
* In the last two blocks before the target, virtual diving planes take over and hold the depth exactly.
* The diagnostic sweeps a line across the blueprint with a progress bar, then prints the report as a short note with a HERMETIC or BREACHED stamp.
* When the submarine is condemned, its screen glitches like the other instruments.
